The Americans, though well-versed in the rumors of an incoming invasion from the North, failed to take proper heed of these warnings. As such, on June 25, 1950, the South Korean soldiers manning the border could do nothing but panic as the horizon darkened with a glinting row of mud-green North Korean tanks. These tanks met with little resistance, rolled right across the border, and headed straight for Seoul.

As Stalin anticipated, the Americans were not about to simply loosen their grip and allow the Communists to seize South Korea without a fight, but it would take a few days for the gravity of the unannounced attack to dawn on the American authorities. After all, the Americans had grown somewhat accustomed to the frequent tussles along the border, which, at this juncture, had already stolen the lives of more than 10,000 North and South Korean soldiers alike. It was only when they learned that the Communist Soviet and Chinese troops had been added to the equation that they sprung into action, for this was no longer a small-time turf war on the opposite side of the world. Rather, the Americans were utterly convinced that without intervention, the Communist collective would be one step closer to achieving their alleged plan for world domination. President Truman proclaimed, “If we let Korea down, the Soviet[s] will keep right on going and swallow up one [place] after another.”
